Veterinary Assistants
Wolf Creek Equine Clinic's (WCEC) veterinary assistants play a critical role in all clinic procedures. From in-patient hospitalization to assisting the veterinarian on farm visits, they are the behind-the-scene stars. Their responsibilities include administering and monitoring intravenous (IV) fluid therapy, medication of hospitalized patients, performing laboratory tests, assisting in surgical procedures, taking radiographs, restraint during medical procedures, inventory control, and maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the facility and the vehicles.
The WCEC Assistants do most of the driving between farm visits. By driving, the vehicles become moving offices for the Doctors and allows for phone calls, data entry on lap-top computers and paperwork catch-up between stops. While conducting farm visits, their presence is vital for the set-up, hook-up and break-down of electronics and medical equipment. Often, they are essential to assuring everyone’s safety, especially around nervous equine patients.

Behind the scenes, WCEC veterinary assistants perform their duties far earlier in the morning and later in the day than the posted office hours. With both a veterinary assistant and Dr. Mende living on the property, around-the-clock monitoring of hospitalized patients is possible.

Assistants Marty and Kim help flush an infected joint on a foal.
