What's up with the Winged Horse?

on Fri, 04/01/2011 - 11:57

I (Dr.M) was on vacation on the Outer Banks of NC in July 2011.  This region had a Centenial Celebration in 2003 where 50 or more of these horse's were dispersed around the community to commemorate the

The winged horse and Dr. Mende
Wright Brothers First Flight (1903-2003).  (See http://www.outerbankspress.com/whe/winged-horses.html ) This particular pegasus was mounted outside the Women's Health Center.

So, I have this thing for Thrift Stores (is that being too personal?). I'm always looking for horsey art and Breyer Horses.  This horse was outside "The Hotline" Thrift Store in Manteo, NC.  It had apparently been donated by the Women's Health Center when they moved out of their building.  All the proceeds made at The Hotline go to aid women and children that are on-the-run from abusive situations.  At first they wouldn't sell her to me, having all ready turned down many offers (so they said).  After about 10 minutes of discussion with the manager Michael Lewis (pictured), telling him what a fitting home I could give her, how she would fit right in with the other pregnant mares on my property, and after making a sizeable donation to their cause, she was mine.  We brought her home in a rented U-Haul.  On the way out of town I only saw 6 others; apparently many have been defamed over the years.

We intend to mount her in front of the clinic with a sign.  We will be holdng a contest for ideas in the design and/or landscaping of the mount.  Follow this story on our Facebook page.
